In September 2005, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) approved funding for UCSC to establish a training program in stem cell research. The CIRM was established in early 2005 with the passage of Proposition 71, the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative.
The UCSC Training Program in Systems Biology of Stem Cells provides predoctoral and postdoctoral students with a solid understanding of the biology of stem cells,
the skills to use stem cells in their own research, and
the ability to devise and use computational approaches in their stem cell research.
Three predoctoral students and three postdoctoral fellows receive support as CIRM Scholars to undertake research projects with faculty mentors from UCSC. Scholars also participate in a variety of learning opportunities, including attending and presenting research at a UCSC monthly seminar, a UCSC stem cell journal club, a Bay Area stem cell research group, and an annual retreat. Scholars are encouraged to attend and present their work at a national scientific conference.

An embryonic stem cell laboratory and transgenic mouse facility support the training program and stem cell research on campus. For more information, contact the laboratory manager.
Stem cell research at UCSC focuses on the basic biological systems operating in the processes of self-renewal and differentiation of stem cells.
