Baskin School of Engineering will showcase groundbreaking research on Thursday, October 22

Groundbreaking research being pursued at the Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz will be showcased at the school's Research Review Day on Thursday, October 22. The event will include faculty research presentations and graduate student posters, providing a broad overview of exciting research in areas such as bioengineering, nanotechnology, software service engineering, cyber-infrastructure, biostatistics, and systems design.

The keynote speaker at the event will be Mark Pinto, chief technology officer, senior vice president, and general manager of energy and environment solutions at Applied Materials. Pinto's talk, "Nanomanufacturing Technology for Energy Applications," begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Engineering 2 Simularium (Room 180). He will discuss opportunities for new solutions in the field of clean energy, based on a combination of materials innovation and highly productive processing platforms.

"Today, society is faced with great challenges requiring innovative solutions," said Arthur Ramirez, dean of the Baskin School of Engineering. "Energy, health care, business, and security are all areas for which our faculty are pursuing innovative solutions. Research in the school is also informed through close interactions with industrial partners in Silicon Valley, as well as through technology needs articulated at local, state, and national levels."

Faculty will present research in the Baskin School of Engineering's six core focus areas: cyber-infrastructure, systems design, bio-info-nano-technology, mathematical and statistical modeling, software and service engineering, and bioengineering. Scheduled talks include "Challenges in Building Long-term Archival Storage from Smart Bricks"; "Nanoscale Optofluidics for Bioparticle Analysis and Manipulation"; "Statistical Issues in the Detection and Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases"; "Medical Robotics--Bioports to the Human Body"; and "Tools for Reliable Software."

These presentations will highlight some of the wide-ranging research projects now under way as the school's researchers and faculty work to develop technology for a changing world. Attendees will also have opportunities to meet the school's top graduate students and discuss their groundbreaking work.
