President Clinton presented with copy of the human genome on CD

Monday, January 15, 2001

Francis Collins, director of the National Human Genome Research Institute and head of the international Human Genome Project presented President Clinton with a CD-ROM of the human genome. The CD was produced by Patrick Gavin and Jorge Garcia of the UCSC human genome project team. Patrick Gavin created a new data compression algorithm in order to fit the entire genome on a 700mb CD.

The gift acknowledges the Clinton administration's leadership and enthusiastic support of the Human Genome Project. A copy of the CD was also placed in the National Millenium Time Capsule assembled by the White House along with items that represent America at this time in history. The Time Capsule will be kept in the Smithsonian Museum.
