University of New Orleans students relocate to UCSC

Shortly after learning of the devastation from Hurricane Katrina, biomolecular engineering adjunct professor Mark Akeson began to ask after his collaborator and former UCSC PhD student, Stephen Winters-Hilt, who is a computer science professor at University of New Orleans. The Winters-Hilt lab was out of commission, but even more disturbing was the plight of his students, many of whom had lost everything. Akeson contacted Lisa Sloan, vice provost and dean of graduate studies, who worked with campus staff and administrators to get the students enrolled and arrange on-campus housing and other support for them. Four graduate students and one undergraduate are now settling into UCSC campus housing, classes, and research.  MORE... full story
