Andrea Steiner named distinguished social sciences teacher
Monday, October 22, 2007
The Division of Social Sciences honored community studies lecturer Andrea Steiner with one of three 2007 Distinguished Teaching Awards. The award was presented on October 11 during the annual fall convocation hosted by the dean of the Division of Social Sciences. The other recipients were Alan Richards, professor of environmental studies, and Jack Vevea, associate professor of psychology. Steiner has written extensively on ageism, especially economic issues related to primary and secondary health care for the elderly. She teaches two upper-division classes in community studies, "Health Care Inequalities" and "Ageism and Activism," and the lower-division biology course "Clinical Health Care: Organization and Financing." Established in 1991 to recognize outstanding undergraduate teaching in the social sciences, the awards are known informally as the “Golden Apple Awards” and carry a $2,500 cash prize, split equally among the recipients. The dean selects recipients from a list of recommendations compiled by a faculty committee based on nominations put forth by department chairs. The committee, chaired by politics professor Daniel Wirls, consisted of environmental studies professor Daniel Press, sociology professor Andrew Szasz, and associate professor of psychology Heather Bullock.
