The Diversity Awards for Undergraduate Research in Genomic Sciences allow
outstanding students to pursue research projects in
areas relevant to the human genome, including
the ethical, legal, and social implications
of genome research. These awards, sponsored by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), particularly support the institute's goal to increase the numbers and capabilities of minority scientists and science professionals. Each year, CBSE grants 6 of these awards to outstanding undergraduates. Awardees participate in the CBSE Research Mentoring Institute (RMI).

Student projects from our diversity awards
Each awardee receives $1,500 for a research project successfully completed over one quarter under the supervision
of a faculty advisor. Students must submit at least one draft report midway through the project in order
to receive the first half of the award ($750), and a high-quality research paper of at least
10 pages by the end of the quarter. CBSE will also assist students in developing a poster to be presented at a scientific meeting and cover the production costs.
Award period: One academic quarter. Students who have successfully completed one quarter of research under one of these awards may apply for subsequent quarters.
Requirements:
- Maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA each academic quarter to remain eligible for participation in the program.
- Meet all required activities, volunteer work, and various group meetings related to the RMI and to the respective academic program.
- Enroll in a 5-unit independent study course to provide the structure for your project.
- Meet weekly with your faculty mentor to discuss your research and academic plans and provide an opportunity for mentorship.
- Meet with the program coordinator twice a month as part of your 5-unit independent course for graduate school preparation sessions. These sessions will prepare you for graduate school by developing academic and research skills.
- CBSE program staff will review your mid-quarter and final papers and will offer feedback and guidance as needed. The final report must be approved by both the faculty advisor and CBSE for successful completion of the award and final payment.
- Our program is committed to helping our awardees achieve their goals as scientists, so we are interested in what they do after the award is completed. Therefore, to participate in the program, you must agree to provide CBSE staff with contact information and academic or employment status for a minimum of 5 years after you complete our program. This information is used to help us assess and improve our program.
Eligibility: Recruitment for the undergraduate program targets highly able juniors and seniors from UCSC and eligible students who have transferred to UCSC from community colleges or other institutions. Members of RMI steering committee will review eligible applicants to select students for interviews and make the final selection of scholars.
We especially encourage members of the following underrepresented groups to apply: African American, Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian, Native American/Alaskan, Hispanic. Students may be enrolled in any program.
For consideration, eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a US citizen, non-citizen national, or permanent resident
- Be an undergraduate enrolled in UCSC and able to earn a degree from UCSC in a declared major within two years after entering RMI
- Plan to pursue a PhD, other advanced study, or a career in a genomics-related or ESLI-related field
Selection criteria: The CBSE diversity program staff will select awardees based on responsiveness to the goals of the program, the academic record of the applicant, and the quality of the project proposal and its potential impact on genome-related research.
Application process: If you intend to apply, please contact the program coordinator (cbseoutreach@soe.ucsc.edu) to discuss your application and research proposal. Submit the following application materials:
